How To Maintain a Mountain Bike

Many people rely on their mountain bike to take them on treacherous and steep terrain and because of this fact, a well maintained mountain bike is essential to a safe and easy journey. To ensure your safety during mountain biking, regular maintenance and check ups of your bike are very important and can even be life-saving. You should always check your bike for any damage or defects before every mountain biking excursion that you take.

Regular maintenance can include something as simple as giving your bike a good clean. Mix your choice of soap and water in a clean bucket and use a soft rag, preferably microfiber, to gently wipe down your entire bike. Be sure to wash the wheels, seat, gears, handlebars, and chain and rinse the entire bike with clear, cool water to remove any excess soap.

Before flipping your bike over to perform internal maintenance, be sure to line the floor where you are working with old towels to protect the varnish on your bike. Next, flip the bike over on it's top or set the bike into a bike rack. Test the wheels by making sure they have adequate air within them. Check each spoke for tightness. By doing a visual examination, make sure that there are no bulges, bumps, or holes in the tires of your bike.

Examine the foot pedals to make sure that they are not damaged or defective. Spin them to be sure that their mobility is operating smoothly. Replace damaged pedals before going on any trek using your mountain bike. Check that all gears to your bike are running smoothly and replace and repair them as you see fit. Watching a mountain biking video will be helpful if you are planning on doing any repairs yourself. Make sure that the chain is fitted on tightly and apply chain lubricant to the upper part of the chain to promote easy flow of the chain.

Your next step is to flip the bike back over and check the brakes. Checking the brakes is probably the most important step to maintaining a well-running mountain bike. Be sure to check the brakes and replace brake pads immediately and before you go mountain biking. There are many videos that one can watch when repairing their mountain bike. Always be sure to do regular maintenance to ensure a safe mountain biking journey.
